The Ballad Of Mona Lisa

May 29, 2011

I am really fond of alternative rock music. Ever since I was a child, I listened to almost all songs from the alternative rock bands available, such as Hoobastank, Linkin Park, Keane, Sum 41, Avenged Sevenfold, System of a Down, and not forgetting, Panic! At The Disco. Recently, the American alternative rock band released a new single entitled "The Ballad Of Mona Lisa" in their third album, "Vices and Virtues". I firstly heard this song in Fly FM and also in Astro Hitz channel. When my second brother, Imran, returned home a few days ago, I discovered that he also loved this song. So, I have downloaded it and listened to it a few times a day. So here goes the song's lyrics:

"The Ballad Of Mona Lisa"
She paints her fingers with a close precision
He starts to notice empty bottles of gin
And takes a moment to assess the sins she’s paid for
A lonely speaker in a conversation
Her words were swimming through his ears again
There's nothing wrong with just a taste of what you've paid for
Say what you mean
Tell me I'm right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign
I want to believe
Woah, Mona Lisa,
You're guaranteed to run this town
Woah, Mona Lisa,
I'd pay to see you frown
He senses something, call it desperation
Another dollar, another day
And if she had the proper words to say,
She would tell him
But she'd have nothing left to sell him
Say what you mean
Tell me I'm right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign
I want to believe
Woah, Mona Lisa,
You're guaranteed to run this town
Woah, Mona Lisa,
I'd pay to see you frown
Mona Lisa wear me out
Pleased to please ya
Mona Lisa wear me out
Say what you mean
Tell me I'm right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign
I want to believe
Woah, Mona Lisa,
You're guaranteed to run this town
Woah, Mona Lisa,
I'd pay to see you frown
Say what you mean
Tell me I'm right
And let the sun rain down on me
Give me a sign
I want to believe
There's nothing wrong with just a taste of what you've paid for

Quoting from Wikipedia, this song is basically about the singer's (Brandon Urie) "personal struggles and convictions many years prior to its official production for Vices & Virtues". However, as I analyze the lyric, along with a little reading from LyricInterpretations.com, I believe that the song is actually about a prostitute, Mona Lisa, who is poor and desperate for money, not because she wants to gain pleasure from sex. Every man who wants to hire her service tries to question her about her mysterious smile, but she never wants to tell them, because she does'nt want them to feel sorry for her, and she is also afraid of losing her customers. This interpretation is not necessarily true, because every person has his/her own perspective about this song.

If you watch the official video of this song, Brandon Urie looks like our reputable vampire, Edward Cullen (although I'm not into Twilight, I do know this person hehe). Hey, maybe you guys should try listening to it by yourselves! It is a great song!

And you guys can even download the song over here! Have fun :)
